Hello Marianne,
What a great question Is there a way to maintain motivation...?
In response I want to start by reminding you that different approaches work for different folks.
When dealing with "motivation" it helps to know if you are more driven by positive reinforcement or reminders of the negative.
For example: If I am dieting, am I more motivated by thoughts of me fitting into my bathing suit this summer (positive reinforcement) or thoughts of having to wear sweats at the beach because I can't fit into the bathing suit (reminder of the negative?
Once you realize which approach is more likely to motivate you - the positive or the negative - then the next step for me has to do with that old expression "Out of Sight, Out of Mind".
Example: Going back to the diet- I would keep pictures of me in my bathing suit (I work best with the positive reinforcement) in the kitchen, in my bathroom on the mirror, and possibly by my computer.
Marianne -In your question you mention projects or fun things to do. The "Out of Sight, Out of Mind." concept would apply.
Example: Take Scrapping booking. I have all the supplies, but I have not taken the time to put an album together. All my supplies are tucked neatly away in the cabinet. I don't really want to leave them out on the kitchen table. Since the scrap booking items are out of site, I forget about them, and there's no thought there to motivate me. But if I take a picture from a scrap booking catalogue and tape it to my computer monitor to remind me about it, the thought stays in sight! I would find other places in my home to put some pictures or sticky notes to remind me as well. I find the visual/ picture motivates me more than a reminder note.
The key to keeping me motivated whether it's a diet or a project like scrap booking or a new behavior I am trying to establish with my kids, the key is the visual reminder. (Don't forget to change the visuals if the motivation needs to be long term.)
I hope this Sheds Some Light on your motivational stumbling block.
