Welcome to Coach-Connect Marianne :o). Great question and I see you've had a couple great responses from other coaches. What fun to read how each mind responds to your question! I wonder if your question is more about commitment than motivation? Seems as though you're motivated to pursue projects that you think might fit you. That you have difficulty following through may be a simple sign to help you notice that what you thought would fit... doesn't! What a wonderful discovery!

Once I notice that I've lost motivation to complete a task, that's a clue for me that it's time to move on and be open to what might show up next for me. If I'm busy feeling guilty because I've lost motivation to complete a task that I didn't and possibly don't want too anymore, I might get stuck in the "shoulds." I can think I should until the moon turns blue, but if the body doesn't move toward the goal, it's clear to me that the goal wasn't as important as I initially thought. Is that bad?... only if I think so. ;o) If I think I should do something and I don't do it, my mind will likely attack me which won't support me completing the task and it may even encourage "self dumping" against myself. In my experience, motivation appears or not, in each moment, and either way supports me unless I think it doesn't. When you notice yourself in a "should" what thoughts/excuses does your mind find to keep you from following through? Does it convince you that you have failed in some way because you haven't completed the task... and how motivating is that? When I lack motivation I've come to realize that I'm experiencing a "spiritual pause." Now that's a thought that can and does support me. Also, perhaps you're someone who likes tasks that can be completed sooner rather than later, in which case notice, then choose projects that support your preference. Projects that take a great deal of time (days and weeks) may end up feeling like an unsatisfying job or obligation, and you may be setting yourself up to fail in your own eyes. Motivation is a concept and commitments by their very nature live and die.

Thank you for the opportunity to ponder and respond to your question. If I can be of further assistance you can find me under the Browse Coaches link. Warmly, Sandra Harris
